Almudena Lobera at Centro Centro
An invisible exhibition design
The eclectic Communications Palace in Madrid, now home to CentroCentro, offers an unusually challenging space for displaying art. Almudena Lobera’s exhibition was located on the third floor, along a long room that unfolds around a large Neo-Plateresque courtyard. The two entrances via separate elevators, which transform this space into one without beginning or end, defined the path along which the exhibition’s spatial concept would unfurl. Secuencia Plano Secuencia became a symmetrical — or at least nearly symmetrical — show, that evokes a sense of déjà vu in the viewer. The logic of the palindrome dictated the positions of the duplicated artworks in the room, while a single piece occupies the center of the space. We accompanied the artist as she constructed this palindrome with sketches and three-dimensional models and offered her technical solutions to transform her visions into experiences for the viewer. Throughout the entire exhibition, there are no purely museographic elements, only works of art conceived by Lobera. The exhibition design is virtually nonexistent, or at least not visible.
